Uju Anya opened up about her journey from a heterosexual marriage to finding fulfillment in a same-sex union during a candid conversation with Chude Jideonwo.

The Nigerian professor admitted that while she loved her ex-husband, she ultimately loved women more and could no longer suppress her identity.

Jideonwo, who recently explained why he never dates women who ask for money, explored the dynamics of her past relationship and the moment she chose to leave.

Anya explained that she felt a deep affection for her former spouse but lacked the intense passion she experienced with women.

The Wedding That Changed Everything

The academic pinpointed a specific event that signaled the end of her marriage to the father of her two children. Anya attended a wedding between two Nigerian women in New York in April 2017 and saw a reality she thought was impossible.

She told the host, “I saw two Nigerian women, two Yoruba women, marry each other… It became real because up to that point, I had never seen that.”

The sight of the couple celebrating their union with both traditional and white wedding ceremonies shattered her previous beliefs.

Anya realized immediately that she needed to pursue that future for herself. The professor left her marital home in August of that same year, just months after witnessing the ceremony.

Open Marriage And Parenting

Before the separation, the couple attempted to save their union by opening the marriage. Anya disclosed that she told her husband about her feelings ten years into their union.

He agreed to let her date women while they stayed together for the sake of their family and shared life. This arrangement held the family together for another four years, but the professor eventually found the double life unsustainable.

She also spoke about how she handled the situation with her children, ensuring they understood the changes in their family structure.

The mother of two maintained open communication with her son and daughter, explaining that she and their father had different sexual orientations.

Facing Public Backlash

The interview touches on the intense criticism Anya faces from Nigerian men on social media. She believes the anger stems from the fact that she represents a “possibility model” for others who might want to live freely.

The conversation adds to a series of bold topics on the platform, similar to when the host claimed that Yoruba filmmakers dominate Nigeria’s entertainment scene.

Anya also confirmed she remarried in a private living room ceremony following the recent US election results. The couple rushed the wedding due to fears that the new administration might target gay marriage rights.
