you cando ssl proxy with squid also i think - you run it and grab cert for your browsers, put your bank on bump list and have viz for siem - i still have to do this, is is a bit gray hat, not really but you do need to think about it and be judicious, it is industry standard best practice if you want to look at it objectively (widely used) , it lives on the edge is basically transparent. a good upgrade for malcolm box, can be cpu intensive if you have a busy network - you have to offer this to clients #pkt cap #dpi #flavors of tls #open source #newsgroups

Das hieß früher nur anders, in den 80ern traff man sich in elektronischen #Mailboxen, in den 90ern erst in #Newsgroups, dann in chats zb dem #IRC und später dann zusätzlich in #Foren. Der Mensch war schon immer sozial und hat auch digital Kontakte gesucht. Das ging dann auch ins offline Leben von #Lanpartys bis zu deutschlandweiten #Usertreffen . Mitte der 90er bin ich zb oft quer durch DE zu unser Treffen gefahren.

@timbray That's my site. Yes, Usenet is "not dead yet" - https://tenor.com/en-GB/view/alive-dead-im-not-dead-yet-gif-13642579 . These days most of the traffic is for "dodgy downloads" - binary files of problematic provenance. But a few dinosaurs like me cling on to it as another text communication medium that's not under the control of crackpot billionaires or rapacious corporations. For my preferred programming language the primary forum is still https://newsgrouper.org/comp.lang.tcl .

I just made another update to https://newsgrouper.org my web interface to Usenet. If you have registered to post you can now set a Face and/or X-Face icon for your posts by uploading a suitable image in the Preferences section. X-Face images are monochrome and most clients will display them. Face is a newer format which supports colour images but is less widely supported. Both are 48x48 pixels, Newsgrouper will do the necessary scaling and format conversions. 🗨 💬 🗯 💭

The writer can be truly anonymous when posting to Usenet.

Usenet is accessible via TOR and open access servers that don't require registration or identifying information.

The writer can write and discuss using a pseudonym or pen name without fear of retaliation from employers, government, friends, and family. This encourages some people to share their innermost thoughts they would otherwise not express. Of course it also encourages trolls, but there are plenty of trolls everywhere else.

Usenet is text-centric so unlike the fediverse there is not a stream of distracting images.

Even after all these years I still prefer reading and posting Usenet newsgroups over all other forms of so-called, 'social media'.
