Is it ever right for #journalists to defy the law in order to gain access to information?

I had to trespass once to cover a news item. I was lucky, all I got was a slap on the wrist, a threatening letter from a law firm, and a pat on the back from my editor.

But what's the bigger picture in terms of laws and #newsgathering? Thoughts?
