Jesse Welles! Masterful Newport debut. My favorite set of the weekend thus far. In-the-moment protest songs 100% on point and 100% sounding great. Plus sit ins from Lukas Nelson, Nathaniel Rateliff and Tommy Prine and an awesome cover of Have Your Ever Seen the Rain. Not only did he blow right through his set time but he was also granted an encore which is basically unheard of.
Newport so far! Fort stage spot, Illiterate Light, and Dan Reeder
Hannah Cohen put out one of my favorite albums of the year and crushed it on stage with a kick-ass band including Sam Evian and Liam Kazar. Could not have kicked off the festival weekend proper any better.
Today: first day of my 14th Newport Folk Festival since my first in 2007. A very interesting day at the Fort, including a 90ish minute rain delay. Everything I heard was good, some great, with some non-musical annoyances mixed in. Not sure anything will top the first thing I saw today, which was Hannah Cohen. But we'll see what happens the rest of the weekend.
I did get to see Kenny Loggins sing Footloose and Kim Deal play Cannonball, so I'm counting today as a win.
“Newport has been amazing at giving us a platform to actually start to provide some [#ClimateChange] solutions for people. A lot of this comes down to reducing the amount that we’re in our #cars. A big part of this tour for us was looking at #infrastructure all up and down the east coast.
“This is a beautiful sight to see 2,000 bicyclists outside one of the best musical festivals in the country. This needs to be the standard for what we see all throughout the country and all throughout the world.”—Jeff Gorman, #IlliterateLight #musician #ClimateActivist #BikeAdvocate

The annual Newport Folk Festival kicked off on Friday. Many festival attendees ride their bikes to the festival to promote reducing carbon emissions. Jeff Gorman, who is part of the rock duo Illiterate Light, joins CBS News to share his experience biking 700 miles to the festival.
These thunderstorms came in quick and hard on the mainland in South County. Stay dry and safe out there Newport

What’s on our mind? Newport Folk Festival! We’re in California and have never been. We enjoy it vicariously via our daughter attending (she lives much closer to Rhode Island now, in Connecticut). Among the very special music she’s enjoyed at Newport was Joni Mitchell in 2022. https://youtu.be/9evpH6yjxrI (ICYMI, Duck Player “lets you watch videos on YouTube without privacy-invading ads, and keeps what you watch from impacting your recommendations.” https://duckduckgo.com/duckduckgo-help)
