A place to share alternatives to popular online services that can be self-hosted without giving up privacy or locking you into a service you don’t control. Rules: 1) Be civil: we’re here to support and learn from one another. Insults won’t be tolerated. Flame wars are frowned upon. 2) No spam posting. 3) Posts have to be centered around self-hosting. There are other communities for discussing hardware or home computing. If it’s not obvious why your post topic revolves around selfhosting, please include details to make it clear. 4) Don’t duplicate the full text of your blog or github here. Just post the link for folks to click. 5) Submission headline should match the article title (don’t cherry-pick information from the title to fit your agenda). 6) No trolling. 7) No low-effort posts. This is subjective and will largely be determined by the community member reports. Since I'm seeing new folks arriving, a few thoughts for you: 1. Take a moment to read https://fedi.tips 2. Hashtags are your friend. Follow them. Use them. Capitalize each word in them 3. You will miss things. That is the point 4. For accounts you don't want to miss, click the bell in the profile or make a list 5. Boost the toots! 6. Be here to make connections 7. No algorithm means post what you want 8. Add alt-text to images #Mastodon #TwitterMigration #Twitter #NewHere
@ar_collins Last thing first, I guess you'll find out who you are here by what you post and comment, responses, and who you follow.
#MastodonHelp, #FediHelp #NewbieHelp are handy hashtags to use / check using the # search option.
Note the use of camel-case (capitalizing each word within a hashtag ) - that helps those who need to use a screen reader. A related matter: there is a description edit "alt" for images, where you can add a description of the photo or whatever so screen readers can say what the image is.
