Islanders solicit funds for ex-NYPD officer convicted in death
The New York Islanders are facing criticism for promoting a fundraiser for a former New York City police sergeant who was convicted of manslaughter. The promotion was shown on the jumbotron during Tuesday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes. It urged fans to donate to Erik Duran's legal defense. Duran was sentenced to three to nine years in prison last week for causing the death of Eric Duprey by throwing a cooler at him in 2023. The team said it would direct a quarter of proceeds from a raffle to Duran's defense. It included a QR code for other direct contributions. Duprey's family criticized the move as insensitive. The Islanders have not commented.
