When the Times of London reported that former New York City mayor Bill de Blasio had misgivings about frontrunner Zohran Mamdani's policies, it seemed unlikely, since de Blasio had previously endorsed the Democratic candidate. It was unlikely — in fact, it wasn't true. In a remarkable snafu by The Times, journalist Bevan Hurley had emailed someone he believed to be de Blasio, but was in fact someone else, and then rushed to print the explosive story. De Blasio demanded a retraction (which he got), reiterated his support for Mamdani, and told @Semafor that he had never had an experience like this in 25 years of public life. As for the fake de Blasio? “You are correct. It was me. The real Bill DeBlasio,” the person who controls the email address responded to a message from Semafor, before ghosting the publication. On Saturday, his campaign held a scavenger hunt. @aftermath.site's Riley MacLeod writes about what it was like to participate. "Being fun is no guarantee that you’ll make a good mayor, but Mamdani’s campaign has embraced what seems like a genuine joy and love of what the city has to offer," MacLeod writes. "Several of his campaign events have involved stunts out on the streets, walking the length of Manhattan or racing a slow bus; these kinds of things get Mamdani’s name and face out there while also portraying him as someone who actually likes being here."
