New London Ledge Lighthouse, 8/17/25. This one was fun! I’ve seen this lighthouse many times at a distance, from the shore; but last weekend we got to tour it, following our tour of the New London Harbor Lighthouse.

The New London Ledge Lighthouse, which sits in the Thames River, went into service in 1909. It was the last manned lighthouse on Long Island Sound until 1987, when it was de-staffed – but remains an active aid to navigation today. Its original fourth order Fresnel lens is on display at the New London Maritime Society Museum (they also run the tours, which I highly recommend).

New London Ledge Lighthouse, 1/5/2025. These photos were taken from right next to the Avery Point Lighthouse in Groton, CT. I took these shortly before I deleted my Instagram account, so they were never posted there. We had visited/spotted a few other lighthouses in Connecticut that day (see previous posts), but were at Avery Point just as the sun was setting. I’ve only viewed the New London Ledge Lighthouse from a distance, but I understand there are occasional tours: I would love to actually set foot on this lighthouse someday soon.

Avery Point Lighthouse, Groton, CT, 1/5/25. Built in 1943, it is the last lighthouse that was built in Connecticut. It was an active navigational aid only from 1944 to 1967. It sits on the campus of UConn at Avery Point on the east side of the Thames River entrance.

Bonus: the New London Ledge Lighthouse is visible in the background on the horizon.
