To me, the sequence with Batel and Pike were tragic and bittersweet, but felt out of place to the conflict, which from what I understood was primal embodiment of Good vs Evil? It took up so much time from a plot that doesn't seem fully explained, and weirdly isn't being further investigated by Star Fleet as an existential galactic threat (which Trek suddenly seems to have SO MANY of).
