There are several baffling things about this, but another one is that #SteveBaker is lecturing *Ireland* about how constitutional referenda should be run.

#Ireland knows. It has a written constitution. It does them all the fucking time.

It’s Britain that’s the novice at constitutional referenda, with its constitution variously written on 8,000 fag packets, in smoke rings, in a knowing wink between Oxford graduates, or in what occurs to a Law Lord when he’s in the bath one morning.

If you really, really wanted to reignite #theTroubles without firing a shot, a very good way would be to tell Irish Nationalists and Republicans that, actually, a border poll will now require the support of a majority PLUS 10 or 20% more of the votes.

It would be a breach of the Good Friday Agreement and it would show that the English will not permit democratic constitutional change. It would smack of the gerrymandering that led us here.

It is probably fair to say that #NorthernIreland has always seemed like a cold house for the young and liberal. Certainly very many of us moved away.

However, for much of that time, the censorious anti-feminist Catholic conservatism of the 26 counties seemed no better.

Now that #Ireland has taken several grand and rightly-celebrated steps away from that legacy, whilst still imperfect, it offers a much warmer welcome home.
