FlounderI have a weird bit of advice for new hams if you want to overcome mic-shyness: find a chill radio club that runs a net and volunteer as a net operator. You may want to join a few nets first to get a feel for it first, but nothing gets you on the air like being on the hook for a specific time every other week or so.
Welp, no worries about the carbon fiber electrically interfering with this 2m/70cm j pole since the POTA33 mast can’t handle the weight of it with only one set of guy wires 😅. But was heard a city away on my weekly net as with my usual mag mount whip.
First time guying a portable mast. Wind is blowing it all over the place. Learned a lot by getting hands on tho.

I’m at one year into #hamradio and today was the most meaningful day by far. I got to help dozens of elementary school students make “contacts” on the local RARS repeater.
Note that these girls, most of a minority racial or ethnic group, are having a lot of fun using communication technology. Throughout the day, the girls were consistently excited, curious, on task, overcoming anxiety to get on the air and just generally AMAZING!
