Anthony Braxton last night at New England Conservatory, thanks to @avantmusicnews for the late heads up on this. Four student ensembles and one with Braxton himself navigated works by the featured composer. I don't have a good way of articulating what I saw and heard last night but it was a fantastic display of colorful, and distinct, experimental music. The Braxton unit was the showstopper, the reed players had incredible breath control, command of dynamics, and an intense attack on their instrument. You could hear their breath and the slamming of the valves all throughout the hall. What a night of (free!) music, glad I made the last minute run to Boston.

Jordan Hall - what a gem. Last night the New England Dept of Contemporary Arts presented Night and Day, the music of Chris Connor and Mahalia Jackson, produced and directed by Hankus Netsky and Ran Blake. Ran was in the audience! Pictured here before the performances are Jordon Hall, and Yoona Kim setting up the ajaeng, upon which she gave a house rousing performance. #NEC #newenglandconservatory #newenglandconservatorycontemporaryensemble #ChrisConnor #MahaliaJackson #RanBlake #HankusNetsky #MusicalPerformance #ajaeng

Another souvenir found in my journal though I can't find the ticket. Boston Modern Orchestra Project at New England Conservatory, 2001. Frank Zappa bookending lesser known composers. The program began with "Dog/Meat" and ended with "Be-Bop Tango", "Outrage At Valdez", and "G-Spot Tornado".

#NewEnglandConservatory is holding free concerts at Jordan Hall all week, beginning with tonight's performance of #Stockhausen's "Kontakte", once again by Steven Gerber and Stephen Drury who performed this before at #SICPP 2017 when they stopped the performance and asked the audience to move to the floor seats to get the full effect of the quadrophonic speaker setup.

You just need to reserve a ticket on the website at no charge: https://necmusic.edu/events/enchanted-circle-stockhausen-mccormack

Enchanted Circle: Stockhausen, McCormack

Enchanted Circle is a concert series which goes back to the seventies under the direction of Joe Maneri and Jim Hoffmam; Stephen Drury took over direction of the series in 1997.      Historically Enchanted Circle has regularly produced concerts by outside soloists and ensembles as well as projects of Conservatory faculty, students and alumni.

NEC Chamber Orchestra: Elgar, Theofanidis, Shostakovich

The NEC Chamber Orchestra was created to provide the students with an opportunity to apply the principals of chamber music in a small orchestral setting.  The participants are chosen by audition at the beginning of the academic year and remain together throughout. As the ensemble rehearses and performs without a conductor, leadership responsibilities are rotated for every work performed.

Attended a free concert at #NewEnglandConservatory a few hours ago: https://necmusic.edu/events/nec-philharmonia-hugh-wolff-tower-berlioz-beethoven

NEC does a lot of these. The free culture is worth the subway fare. Just a suggestion to degenerates saving for beer money.

Saw a poster for a lecture by former Bad Plus pianist Ethan Iverson who is now on the faculty:

I saw The Bad Plus in '03 at the 2nd stage at Newport (followed by Dewey Redman). I may be there. You should, too.
