It's time for a vote! last year, I was lucky enough to findnot one, but two Acer Aspire One D270s. The first was sold as an extra, but worked well. The second was still sealed in the box! I never thought I would have the pleasure of opening a brand new netbook again. But to this day, I still haven't done so. Now, I have two choices, though I guess three, if I send both off.

1. Have the keyboard replaced, and the drive and Windows upgraded to 7 Professional on my open one.
2. Open the new one and have the drive, Windows, and ram upgraded.
3. Send both machines in and have the above work done.
Technically, on both machines, the drives are fine. They are 320gb models, so they have more than enough space for my needs. But they're 5400 rpm drives, and I want either a 7200 rpm replacement or a solid state one. My open machine has 2gb of ram, which is all the D270 can officially take. I have heard of some people installing 4gb and Windows seeing something like 2.9gb (I forget the exact number, but it wasn't the full 4), but I have also read that it's not always stable and there could be some problems with booting. Can anyone confirm this? If I keep it at 2gb, I am guessing it would make sense to use a 32-bit version of Windows 7 and not a 64-bit one. All of my programs except Reddit for Blind, Accessible Youtube Downloader, and TweeseCake are 32-bit, but only Reddit for Blind works on 7. I am still trying to get the others to work, but that may be an issue with this particular virtual machine.

So, which should I do? Open the new machine, or just send in the old one?

Wieso muss ich beim #MacBookNeo gerade an #Netbooks denken? Apple recycelt einfach ein gutes, wenn auch altes Konzept.

@yura @AngelaScholder @dps910 @wboss some early #Netbooks like the #EeePC701 even had the infamous 137GB - Barrier in it's #BIOS, which I encountered trying out @OS1337 on it!

  • And yes that lockup happens on those.

Try setting it to USB-CDROM and using a stick with like a 4GB partition ?

@monkey well, I do have the same issue.

I'm working on @OS1337 for that reason.

Attached: 1 image Thanks to a donation by @[email protected], I've been able to test @OS1337 on a real #EeePC701-4G and so far this seems to have only some minor hiccups. - OFC I've first ran into the #137GB barrier with the #BIOS when booting my regular #Vendoy drive but then again at the time the #EeePC was released, 240GB SSDs were unobtanium and would've costed propably more than a dozen 701-4G's retail...

I genuinely liked and miss netbooks. They were perfect for small things, didn't use a lot of power, and if the battery puffed, you could easily remove it AND still use the device! I hate that they were beaten by tablets. Bring back netbooks.

OpenSuse 32 bits (IV)

@ActionRetro whilst #ArchLinux runs on a lot of things, #TinyCoreLinux and @OS1337 can go even lower...

  • The only reason why I've not even tried building something for crappy #ARM #Netbooks is because I've got none of them at hand to test against.

That being said if you have an #i486SX with 16MB RAM and 1440kB FDD I hope you can give #OS1337 a try...
