## The rain

I like it when it rains. It's pretty, and I like the sound it makes.

Reply: Why do we talk about the weather?
=====

➡️ One time I started talking about absolutely nothing important, and my stepfather asked why. I said, "It's filler." "I just wanted to talk," and he said, "I don't like filler."
➡️ I thought about that for a while, and before I said anything, I would ask myself, "Does this really matter to me?" After doing that for a while, I was happier with the things I was saying, because everything I said mattered to me.

"I like how folks bring up the weather as a filler when there's nothing to talk, filing up the Awkwaaard Silences."

Why do silences feel awkward, Frankie?

## Nervousness During Conversations

Is it okay for someone to take their time when responding to someone else?

It makes me feel nervous when I have to respond to someone immediately, especially if I don't have a lot to say at the time.

Sometimes I prefer to just sit in the present with someone rather than talk about "the weather" or "work" or "school," you know?

If someone does say something to me, I want to have time to sit with what they said to me, and think about it before I respond.

Even if I don't respond, and I just listen, I think that's better than the constant chatter.

## What Is the Expectation?

Is there an expectation that people have to respond immediately, or is that just me?

Where did it come from? Why don't we talk about it?

If the expectation was "Respond if you have something to say," would it be better?

P.S.

I know that there are some people who do very well with this style of conversation, but there are also people like me who struggle with it.
