#NenanaRidgeComplex forest roads restricted to firefighter traffic only

BY 2025 NENANA RIDGE COMPLEX on AUGUST 7, 2025

“…Fire Update: Unmanned Aerial Systems continue to detect areas of heat, many of which are well within the fires’ perimeters. Guided by the drone operators, the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection Fairbanks 1 Crew is digging out hot spots along the edge of the fires so that they will be exposed to the forecast rains. Digging out the areas of heat along the perimeter to catch rain will utilize the natural elements to extinguish them. If these areas were not exposed, they would continue to smolder in the deeper layers of duff where the rain would have little to no effect. Excavators continue to work in Little Goldstream community, breaking up dozer berms and rehabbing fire lines. Graders have started working on Dineege Avenue and Toghotthele Road…”

BY 2025 #NENANARIDGECOMPLEX on AUGUST 6, 2025

“…Fire Update: Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection Fairbanks 1 Crew arrived back on Bonanza Creek Fire Tuesday after taking days off. They gridded for hot spots on the fire’s edge along Nenana Ridge Road West. Wednesday they will grid the north perimeter working west from Nenana Ridge Road. The incoming Incident Commander and a member of operations took a reconnaissance flight Tuesday morning to survey the fire area and get a scope of the remaining repair work. Graders and compactors are working together on forest roads while excavators continue to scatter vegetative material over control lines and breakup dozer berms. There will continue to be occasional smoke visible from interior areas of the fires as heavy, down trees continue to smolder with warmer and dryer conditions…”

Cool, wet weather slows repairs on #NenanaRidgeComplex as smaller organization assumes command

BY 2025 NENANA RIDGE COMPLEX on AUGUST 5, 2025

“…Fire Update: Rain made forest roads slippery and unsafe for travel Monday slowing suppression repair work across much of the complex. Traveling on roads that had been graded would have required them to be work on again. The Unmanned Aerial System flew reconnaissance missions between rain showers mapping repair work and seeking hot spots. The helicopter assigned to the complex responded to Anderson where a structure fire spread into the wildlands. Bucket work kept the fire from spreading beyond a tenth of an acre.

Fire management is transitioning to a smaller organization based out of Fairbanks Area Forestry. They will assume command Tuesday evening at 8:00 PM. Their focus will be on suppression repair of control lines and forest roads. Fire engines will continue to patrol monitoring the any issues that could compromise containment. There will continue to be occasional smoke visible from interior areas of the fires as heavy, down trees continue to smolder when warmer and dryer conditions return…”

Hot spots mitigated as suppression repair continues on #NenanaRidgeComplex

BY 2025 NENANA RIDGE COMPLEX on AUGUST 4, 2025

“…Fire Update: Firefighters in UTVs extinguished hot spots along the Toghotthele Road Saturday. An Unmanned Aerial System flew the road Sunday identifying additional areas of heat for firefighters. A helicopter made bucket drops on several areas that were smoldering and producing smoke. The majority of these were within the interior of the Bonanza Creek Fire. One area on the fire’s edge, above Bonanza Creek at the eastern end of Nenana Ridge required multiple bucket drops to cool it down. Road work continues on Skinny Dick’s Logging Road, Nenana Ridge Road, East Nenana Ridge Road, and Bonanza Creek Road. Engine crews are repairing helispots along the southern flank of Goldstream Creek Fire. This work includes scattering slash and trees that were removed from the landing zone back over the cleared area. Heavy equipment continues working in the Little Goldstream Community…”

Warm, dry conditions aid repair on #NenanaRidgeComplex

BY 2025 NENANA RIDGE COMPLEX on AUGUST 3, 2025

“…Fire Update: Heavy equipment is still working in the Little Goldstream Community. Firefighters in UTVs are investigating reported hot spots along the Toghotthele Road. A road grader has started working on Skinny Dick’s Logging Road. The road surface is still too wet on the Nenana Ridge Road so the grader working there is cleaning out the ditches, pulling material onto the road surface. On East Nenana Ridge Road, an excavator is breaking apart dozer berms and opening drainage to allow the road surface to dry before it can be graded. Resource Advisors (READ) are inspecting repair work to firelines and spike camps along the southeastern portion of Goldstream Creek Fire. READs are technical specialists who advise on the protection of natural and cultural resources during wildland fire incidents. They helped to develop the suppression repair plan and will see that its specifications are met. Unmanned Aerial Systems are still being used to locate areas still holding heat. This drone, with infrared cameras, is working along the northern and southern flanks of the Bonanza Creek Fire. Fire engines are still patrolling the fire area looking for hot spots and mitigating hazards…”

Suppression repair underway on #NenanaRidgeComplex

BY 2025 NENANA RIDGE COMPLEX on AUGUST 1, 2025

“…Fire Update: Wet and muddy conditions on many portions of Bonanza Creek and Goldstream Creek fires kept firefighters off forest roads. Personnel started repairing dozer berms and other damage caused by suppression efforts in Little Goldstream Community. Excavators began spreading vegetative material over the indirect dozer line created on an old powerline easement leading off the Parks Highway. The objective is to construct visual and physical barriers to limit access. Spreading the material over the bladed area will lessen erosion. Water bars will be built on sloped areas to divert runoff. Equipment is being staged as areas are scouted for repair around both fires. Work will start once it is dry enough to work without causing more damage. Fairbanks 1 and Nulato Hills crews worked to extinguish lingering hot spots on the south and southwestern edges of Bonanza Creek Fire…

Showers and cool temperatures aid firefighting efforts on #NenanaRidgeComplex

BY 2025 NENANA RIDGE COMPLEX on JULY 29, 2025

“…Fire Update: The Nenana Ridge Complex saw rainy, cool conditions on Monday. Resources patrolled the roads off Parks Highway and worked sections that were accessible off the highway corridor. Crews were later withdrawn from the fire because of safety concerns due to depreciating weather conditions. Both the Bonanza Creek Fire and the Goldstream Creek Fire received wetting rain. Weather predictions show a high chance for showers over the complex through Thursday.

Heavy equipment, hazard trees, ash pits, and highway traffic remain potential hazards. As hunting season approaches, hunters and recreators are asked to stay out of the fire areas due to ongoing safety concerns. Crews are still actively engaged in firefighting operations…”
