I picked up watching #Elementary where I left off (around season 4, when Flip was born), and remembered hearing #NelsanEllis had passed away suddenly. I Googled to learn why, and oh. Heartbreaking. 😔

Death of 'True Blood' Actor Nelsan Ellis Spotlights Risk in Detoxing Alone

Actor Nelsan Ellis dies of heart failure following sudden withdrawal of alcohol use.

NBC News

I had not known #NelsanEllis, the actor and playwright known for his unforgettable portrayal of Lafayette on True Blood, had passed away in 2017. I'm fighting back tears in my very belated mourning for an artist I wish I'd known much better. He was so young, only 39 at the time.

The manner of his death is deeply saddening and so eminently preventable. Nelsan had drug and alcohol problems he was ashamed to discuss and ask help for, and was attempting to withdraw from alcohol on his own in the days prior to his death. He was hospitalized due to serious complications from alcohol withdrawal syndrome, which caused his death.

If you still think addiction is a matter of willpower or morality, there's your willpower. There's your morality. This brilliant artist tried to *will* himself out of addiction, enduring the kind of pain I flinch to even imagine, and it killed him.

The shame and secrecy surrounding substance addiction literally kills. We need changes in not only individual attitudes but systemic change so that people suffering from addiction, especially those most marginalized, can be treated and not criminalized and stigmatized.

I'm so sorry how terribly you were failed, Nelsan. You are much missed.
