Google ex employee starts his own search engine

If there are any other ex-#Neeva Search users out there who wanted to know what became of the tech—

Spring 2023 - was when Snowflake acquired Neeva.
Winter 2023 - the tech from Neeva was used for Snowflake's new "Universal Search"
Spring 2024 - this tech was also adapted to Snowflake's "Cortex Search" which uses a combination of both traditional search ranking alongside AI vector search.

One of the co-founders of Neeva is now the CEO of Snowflake.

#DuckDuckGo è giù, come annunciato su Twitter.

Bingo! Or #Bing-go! #DuckDuckGo, #Neeva, #Ecosia, #Qwant and #Yahoo down? I hope a ton of people are switching to @Mojeek today. https://mojeek.com
Mojeek

Mojeek is a web search engine that provides unbiased, fast, and relevant search results combined with a no tracking privacy policy.

Thoughts from me, as I read it (mostly for myself, so may be nonsense!):

The #Neeva example and this quote:

"...new general search engines can avoid many of the costs historically borne by an incumbent like Google. As Neeva recognized..."

It's interesting and shows #Google focus on costs (and how bloated they are?) compared to newer competitors.

I used #Neeva until the moment they closed, and I really liked them

Internetsearch is getting worse and worse. Some search engines just stop being useful (#Google) or existing (#Neeva). Others do shady businesses (#Brave) or work with them (#kagi).

There are some outliers like @Mojeek which admittedly keeps getting better and there’s options like #Metager or #Nona too.

But surfacing relevant info keeps getting harder. Now I often use at least two #SearchEngines to find what I need.

Huge yikes. Kagi is now partnering with Brave to power its search results — and they seem to be dismissing their users’ concerns regarding this partnership with a company that’s notorious for being led by a proud anti gay rights supporter. Just as I’ve consistently advised against using Brave’s products, I now advise against using Kagi as long as it contributes to a homophobic business. There can be no neutral politics when it comes to people’s rights and lives. https://kagifeedback.org/d/2808-reconsider-your-partnership-with-brave

#Neeva, the privacy-centric Google alternative, has sadly closed its doors 😢
The announcement cites the challenge of convincing users to explore alternative search engines as the most difficult hurdle.

It's a real pity to see one less search engine that prioritises your #privacy.
Have you "googled" something today? 🤔

Google killer, killed: Neeva and the limits of privacy as a philosophy

A search startup that revolved around providing an ad-free, privacy-centric alternative to Google is calling it quits — and it's well worth our while to contemplate why.

The ex-CEO of #Neeva, now owned by #Snowflake, says “window is shutting” for #AI search disruption.

On the one hand, he would say that, wouldn’t he?

On the other, he does have a point about the predictability of the enterprise business as opposed to the consumer world — which is why I am very happy to stick to the former.
