Finally! A guide to the seemingly chaotic capitalization of #nextstep.

NeXTSTEP Naming

For decades, the precise naming and capitalization of NeXT’s operating systems have been a source of endless confusion. Was it NeXTstep, NeXTStep, or NEXTSTEP? The answer often changed depending on the specific version, the architecture, or the marketing strategy of the time. Even today, these terms are frequently mixed up…

This is an old animation I had on VHS. I animated the train part (30 yrs ago?) with Mathematica on my NeXTdimension cube (using the graphic board NTSC Composite outputs). I renumerized it back from tape lately and added the scrolling text. Et aujourd'hui j'ai accolé l'intro musicale. Reste plus qu'à mettre des bips bips sonores lors de l'arrivée des impulsions lumineuses dans la partie 'train'...

Ah yeah, no way to build p7zip without (p)threads, and I certainly don't know how to shim in NEXTSTEP Mach threads (maybe similar to what old p7zip code does for BEOS).

No one seems to have ever ported GNU pth to Nextstep either.

There's a passing mention of the existence of a threads compatibility library in a forum thread, but I haven't seen any links to actual code: https://jort.link/www.nextcomputers.org/forums/index.php?msg=16828

So no 7zip benchmark for NeXT machines, short of maybe installing NetBSD/next68k to that end?

The hell!

This NeXTdimension card actually works! Apparently my main error after all this RAM swapping was to enable parity checking, since main RAM was now parity-enabled (but SIMMs in the NeXTdimension are not). Also moved the four modules towards the edge of the dimension board.

I have no idea why we didn't get it up and running back in the 1990s and we always assumed the card was faulty.

System log sais:
NeXTdimension Board in Slot 2:
ROM Version 43, Memory Controller step 1, i860 step C.1
32 MBytes of DRAM installed, PAL video configured
NeXTdimension server running

(Attached photo is slightly weird, the phone cam could not be convinced to use a sane brightness, and gamma correction messed it up.)

Oh. The system does power on with the NeXTdimension card plugged in, and I do get ROM Monitor output on a VGA screen. But either the system doesn’t boot, or I missed installing some required component and don’t get to see anything from the OS?

So, after remapping bad blocks from the middle of the disk, there certainly is going to be some silent file system corruption… After a manual fsck, the system boots - but, as expected, it expects to find a NetInfo parent with more configuration information…

The system then boots up using local data, but I really don’t remember our root password from over 25 years ago…
