Ruolo strategico e perdite recenti

The F-15E Strike Eagle, characteristics and role of the fighter-bomber.

The downed American jet in Iran should be an F-15E Strike Eagle, a multirole fighter-bomber designed for deep strike missions and air superiority, capable of operating in any weather conditions, day or night.

Entered into service at the end of the 1980s, it is a two-seat version of the F-15, with pilot and weapons officer systems tasked with managing sensors and armament. The aircraft is equipped with two Pratt & Whitney F100 turbofan engines and can exceed Mach 2.5, with a range of approximately 3,800 kilometers and an operational altitude of over 18,000 meters. Thanks to the contoured fuel tanks along the fuselage, it can increase range without significantly compromising performance.

Onboard and Navigation Systems
Among the main onboard systems are the APG-70 radar for detecting targets at long range and the Lantirn system, which allows for low-altitude navigation and attack even in poor visibility. The aircraft also has integrated GPS and inertial systems with digital maps and infrared and laser sensors for the use of precision-guided armament.

Combat Capabilities and Armament
The F-15E is capable of engaging both aerial and ground targets simultaneously, maintaining self-defense capabilities during attack missions. It can carry a wide range of weapons, including AIM-9 and AIM-120 air-to-air missiles, guided bombs, and a 20 mm internal cannon.

Strategic Role and Recent Losses
Designed to strike strategic targets deep within without needing escort, the Strike Eagle remains one of the United States’ main attack assets, thanks to the combination of range, multirole capability, and operational precision. The one downed in Iran is the fourth F-15 lost since the beginning of the war: at the beginning of March, three aircraft were struck by error by the Kuwaiti anti-aircraft defense. In that case, all six members of the crews managed to eject and were safely recovered.
