A small bird, a familiar song—and a moment of doubt.

Perched in a pine tree, singing softly, this little warbler caught my attention. At first glance, I thought it might be a grauwe fitis (*Phylloscopus trochiloides*, commonly known as the Greenish Warbler). But something didn’t quite match—no clear wing bar, slightly different tones. Then the thought shifted: could it be a Siberian chiffchaff (*Phylloscopus collybita tristis*), a rare visitor in the Netherlands?

Or… just a very typical chiffchaff.

That’s the challenge with these species. Subtle differences in plumage, song, and structure. Easy to question, difficult to confirm. If you know, I’d genuinely like to hear your thoughts.

Captured with my usual setup—Canon 5D Mark IV and Sigma 100–400mm—this was less about the perfect shot and more about observation. Listening, watching, waiting until the bird revealed itself.

And all of this unfolding during an unusual period. Weeks of warm, dry, sunny weather have changed the feel of the landscape. Pine trees releasing their scent into the air. Early-season wildfires appearing more frequently. Things that used to be rare are becoming less so.

Thankfully, the rain has returned these past days.

Nature needed it.

And maybe, so did we.

The woodpecker in the morning sun.

During a very early morning walk in the Groesbeekse Bos, my wife and I spent our 26th anniversary doing what we both love—being out in nature. This time, I wasn’t just photographing, I was also teaching. She had her Canon 7D Mark II with my Sigma 100–400, while I worked with my Canon 5D Mark IV and the original Canon 100–400.

Then we found it: the Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), recognizable by the red patch on the back of its head. A beautiful subject, lit by the soft morning sun.

She positioned herself on the other side of the tree, shooting into the light—worried the bird would fly if she moved. And that fear is real. But it also became a lesson: first enjoy the moment, then observe, and only then try to capture it. Sometimes that means carefully adjusting your position. If the bird flies away, at least you truly experienced it.

This image is mine, but the moment was ours.

Woodpeckers use their reinforced skulls and shock-absorbing structures to peck thousands of times a day without injury—nature’s engineering at its finest.

On a winter’s day in the Kampina, I crossed paths with one of my favorites: the Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus), or kuifmees in Dutch.

A small, energetic bird with its unmistakable crest—like a tiny mohawk—usually hidden high in pine canopies. Not an easy one to spot, let alone photograph. But after days of snow, this little one came down, likely searching for food beyond its usual shelter.

There it was, hopping in and out of the snowy branches, quick, alert, and full of character.

Moments like these make the list grow. The robin, the kingfisher, the long-tailed tit… and now this one. Each encounter a reminder of how much life surrounds us, if we just take the time to look.

One planet. One responsibility. In a universe where life is rare, this feels worth protecting.

A Friday morning, a familiar place, and the promise of sunrise.

At Huys ter Heide, just as the sun began to rise, I found myself standing by a small lake. The water was perfectly still—no wind, no ripples—turning it into a natural mirror. The sun, still low on the horizon and partially hidden, painted the scene in deep yellows, oranges, and blacks. A quiet moment where light and reflection became one.

Scenes like this are a reminder of how much timing matters. A single breath of wind would have broken the illusion.

Not long after, two cranes rested near the water’s edge during their journey north. A rare and beautiful sight… but sometimes nature gives, and sometimes it takes away. A passerby startled them before I could capture the moment.

And that’s okay. The memory remains.

About an hour and 5 kilometers into my walk in the Oisterwijk forests, near the edge of a heath field, I was rewarded with one of my favorite little birds: the Long-tailed Tit (Aegithalos caudatus).

A small, energetic bundle of feathers, constantly hopping from branch to branch, never sitting still for long. Not the easiest subject to photograph… but absolutely worth the effort.

With its soft black-and-white tones and a subtle hint of color on its head, it almost feels like a tiny, living brushstroke moving through the bushes.

Moments like these are more than just photographs for me. These walks are small paths of healing. Not because I am searching for something specific, but because nature keeps offering these quiet, fleeting gifts—light through branches, wind through leaves, and the simple presence of life around us.
