#Coccoloba #RiverOaksPreserve Plant Sale and Workday

Tue Mar 31, 2026 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Estero's River Oaks Preserve
9541 Broadway Ave E, Estero, FL 33928

"Estero’s River Oaks Preserve is a passive recreational area with a strong focus on concepts of simplicity, natural/native care of the land, #sustainability, and being 'one with nature.' This property will expose visitors to a lesser-known side of Florida – one with shiny blueberries, #hogplums, #GopherApple, #ButterflyMilkweed and where the gopher tortoises live.

This Project is a partnership between the Coccoloba Chapter of the Florida #NativePlant Society and the Village of #Estero. Support includes USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, #Audubon of Southwest #Florida and others.

Volunteer hours are Sundays and Tuesdays from 9-1. Come check us out!

Throughout the property, you will find:

- cabbage palm (Sabal palmetto)
- common fanpetals (Sida ulmifolia)
- common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia)
- kiss-me-quick (Portulaca pilosa)
- laurel oak (Quercus laurifolia)
- live oak (Quercus virginiana)
- Poor-man's-pepper (Lepidium virginicum)
- southern river sage (Salvia misella)
- Spanish needles (Bidens alba)
- tropical sage (Salvia coccinea)
- whitemouth dayflower (Commelina erecta) "

ESTERO'S RIVER OAKS PRESERVE 9541 BROADWAY EAST ESTERO, FL 33928

The Coccoloba and Naples Chapters of the Florida Native Plant Society
All three colors of tropical sage, in front of my studio. One thing I find curious about this so-called #NativePlant is that I don’t recall seeing it in the natural landscape. I only ever see it in cultivated gardens. It’s possible I haven’t been to its natural habitat, but I’ve been to so many places in this state that I think it’s strange I haven’t run into it yet.

Added 3 new native plants to my front flower plot yesterday, a purple poppy mallow, a stiff goldenrod, and a heath aster. Hoping for plants the butterflies like, that will work with my dry and full sun patch of ground.

Two of the three rattlesnake master plants survived the winter, and the rose verbena is already blooming.

Red Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum) This plant has been pushing flowers since early January and is one of many of this species that we have at the house. Planted around our city lot, the flowering season is extended by sun exposure and micro climate that prolongs forage for insects and hummingbirds. This is on the south side of the house and is the first to bloom.

🤠 work (a local council) arranged to plant a memorial tree in his memory.

I requested a burgundy coloured callistemon. They selected the callistemon wildfire - ideally suited to coastal areas and flowing through 3 seasons.
I picked a location at Cotton Tree, overlooking the Maroochy River, next to a park bench located beside a bike path. They confirmed the location.

The planting was this morning. Many people from his work were there as well as all Qld based immediate family.

The tree had barely been planted before a bird was hanging off it, enjoying the nectar.

Eastern Red Cedar, (Juniperus virginiana) provides lots of berries for birds who are hungry as the winter drags on.

#MOFGA - #PlantCorridors

By Heather McCargo, Photos by Jean English, Winter 2014-2015

"#NativePlant corridors attract #pollinators and #wildlife to your farm by stretching across your property to connect your piece of #NativeHabitat to nearby #meadows, #wetlands or #woodlands. This creates a much larger area for #NativePollinators to #forage, raise young and migrate. Corridors may run along a road, between fields, in a #swale or on the edge of a #forest, connecting habitats off the property and returning native plants to the parts of the farm not suitable for traditional crops.

This article describes two approaches to creating native habitat corridors: changing #mowing habits to favor native species, and planting woody and herbaceous combinations to increase native plant diversity on the farm.

Populations of all native species are in decline across the state. Our human footprint is taking its toll on wild creatures, including pollinators such as #bees and #butterflies that are so important on the farm for crop pollination. Native plant species each share an evolutionary history with indigenous insects, birds, reptiles, mammals, bacteria and fungi. When native plants are gone, many of these creatures go too, leading to a collapse of ecosystem function. Farmers benefit from the services provided by a healthy ecosystem, such as groundwater recharge; clean surface streams and ponds; pollination; a diversity of birds, spiders and amphibians to eat many insects including crop pests; and beneficial soil fungi and bacteria. Fortunately, when native plants are reintroduced into a landscape, many of these other creatures return.

As farmers and landowners, we can bring native plants, and the attendant diversity, back into the Maine landscape in a way that works with a farmer’s busy schedule. Many native plants thrive in dry, wet and shady areas that are poor sites for traditional farm crops."
