Any idea who I might talk to there about helping them protect their digital sovereignty from proprietary enclosement? Specifically by getting rid of the Goggle Tag Manager scripts their page is loading, and replacing their dependencies on MapBox (now proprietary) with something like MapLibre;

Native Land is a resource to learn more about Indigenous territories, languages, lands, and ways of life. We welcome you to our site.

Excellent, timely piece on the overlapping #indigenous histories of the #NativeLandDigital project

"Maps show power, and they confer power. They reflect and reify the way those in power understand the world around them. This truth becomes evident when we consider a map of the United States, with its familiar rectilinear boundaries to the north and south and patchwork of state borders spanning the landmass. This map represents one viewpoint: that of the colonizer."

Native Land Digital is the go-to resource for learning about whose land you’re on. But attaching a name to a landscape is not straight-forward.

On the @stamen blog you can read the transcript of my interview with Tanya Ruka, Māori indigenous artist and Executive Director of #NativeLandDigital. The native-land.net map is (in my opinion) one of the most interesting and important mapping projects of the past 10 years, and I was very lucky to talk w/ Tanya about the map as well as her many art and design projects related to traditional Māori navigation and indigenous understandings of ecosystems.
