Swansea Science Festival returns this October half‑term with explosive shows and star wildlife guests

Hosted by Swansea University in partnership with the National Waterfront Museum, the festival will run on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October, transforming the city‑centre venue into a hub of discovery and entertainment.

Headline acts include the Royal Institution’s Explosive Food and Fired Up shows, bringing science to life with dramatic demonstrations. Wildlife fans can hear first‑hand stories from the natural world as internationally renowned presenters and filmmakers Lizzie Daly and Hamza Yassin take to the stage.

Crowd‑pleasing favourites such as Bubbles and Balloons and Superhero Scientists will return, alongside a packed programme of talks and demonstrations covering everything from cutting‑edge engineering to the surprising uses of medical maggots — and even the science behind sweets and beer.

Something for everyone

Free drop‑in activities and interactive exhibits will run throughout the museum, offering opportunities for visitors to get hands‑on with experiments and meet researchers. Organisers say the programme is designed to appeal to everyone — from the simply curious to budding young scientists and lifelong enthusiasts.

Since its launch in 2016, the Swansea Science Festival has become a fixture in the city’s cultural calendar, attracting more than 10,000 visitors in previous years.

Professor Helen Griffiths, Swansea University’s Pro‑Vice‑Chancellor for Research and Innovation, said:

“Since 2016, the Swansea Science Festival has been a key event for the city, one that brings the community together with our academics and researchers through a shared love of science. We look forward to welcoming everyone in person for what promises to be an unmissable celebration of science for all ages.”

Organised by Swansea Council, the festival will once again transform the city into a hub of jazz excellence, celebrating music, culture, and community.

The festival opens on Thursday 4 September with a special show by Pete Long & Simon Spillett’s Jazz Scurriers at Cu Mumbles.

From Friday through to Sunday, the National Waterfront Museum will host a dynamic programme, featuring acclaimed artists such as Paul Booth Quartet; Triple H Horns featuring Mo Pleasure, Kedma Macias, and Wayne Hernandez; London Django Collective; and the Power of Gower Festival Big Band.

Legendary multi-instrumentalist and former musical director for Earth, Wind & Fire, Mo Pleasure, has collaborated with icons including Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, and Roberta Flack.

Also in the line-up is the Joe Webb Trio, who have earned a stellar reputation for their ability to blend the old and the new, captivating audiences with every note. Born and raised in Neath, Joe Webb moved to London in 2013 where he’s established himself as a ‘rockstar’ of the jazz world, fusing the elegance of traditional jazz with the bold spirit of 90s Brit-pop and the rich textures of his Welsh heritage.

The festival will close with a spectacular tribute show, The Wonder of Stevie, celebrating the music of Stevie Wonder.

Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration, Events and Tourism at Swansea Council, Councillor Robert Francis-Davies, said:

“Swansea International Jazz Festival is a shining example of how culture and creativity continue to thrive in our city. It brings together local talent and international stars, energising our waterfront and city centre with the exciting spirit of jazz.

“We’re proud to support events like this that not only entertain but also contribute to Swansea’s growing reputation as a vibrant cultural destination.”

A highlight of the 2025 programme is the return of the Copper Jack Jazz Cruises; a unique opportunity to enjoy live jazz aboard Swansea’s iconic riverboat, as it sails along the River Tawe. These intimate performances offer a truly unique and atmospheric way to experience the music.

Also returning is the popular Stroller Programme, featuring over 30 free gigs across city centre venues, pubs, and cafes. This community-focused strand of the festival brings jazz to the streets, showcasing emerging talent and local favourites in an accessible and welcoming format.

With a mix of ticketed headline shows, free community performances, and unique experiences like the jazz cruises, the festival offers something for everyone, from seasoned jazz lovers to curious newcomers.

Tickets and VIP packages are now available. For the full programme and booking details, head online to visitswanseabay.com.

City centre amphitheatre set for dramatic makeover with new stage canopy

Located opposite the LC and nestled between Swansea Arena and the National Waterfront Museum, the much-loved amphitheatre has already seen upgrades to its steps, handrails and mains power supply this summer.

Now, Swansea Council has announced plans to install a sail-style canopy over the stage and first six rows of seating, offering shelter for performers while preserving the venue’s open-air charm.

Work is scheduled to begin after the summer season wraps up, which includes the return of the Amplitude free music festival next month.

“This upgrade is part of our ongoing commitment to bring top-quality cultural, music and creative events to Swansea. It will turn heads and breathe new life into a space that’s already a key part of our city’s cultural infrastructure.”

The canopy is designed to extend the amphitheatre’s usability throughout the year, supporting a wider range of community and cultural events. It complements Swansea’s growing network of performance spaces, from Singleton Park and Grand Theatre to the state-of-the-art Swansea Arena.

Cllr Francis-Davies added:

“The amphitheatre is one of the city’s key assets — an iconic space that plays an important role in our public realm. These improvements will help ensure it remains vibrant, safe and welcoming for residents and visitors alike.”
