Backlit Harpy Eagle chicks are the devil! 🤣 This beautiful but wrongly lit baby eagle was a real challenge... I'm not sure how to process backlit photos, suggestions are always welcome. Many days in Panama are overcast, but not this day!

Great news for America's national bird! The bald eagle, once on the brink of extinction, has made a remarkable comeback and was officially designated as the national bird of the United States in December 2024. Thanks to conservation efforts and the banning of harmful pesticides, these majestic birds are now thriving across the country.

American bald eagles are having a moment, ecologically and culturally

America’s national bird, the bald eagle, is having a moment. The eagles find themselves in a sort of environmental updraft since the early 2000s, when the federal government took the thriving birds off its endangered species list with more states following suit. Culturally, too, they’re soaring. Joe Biden in December signed legislation making the raptor the country’s national bird. New Jersey this month became the latest state to delist the bald eagle as endangered. And to the chagrin or elation of football fans depending on rooting interests, the Philadelphia Eagles are playing in the Super Bowl.

The bald eagle is now officially recognized as the national bird of the United States! 🦅 Signed into law by President Joe Biden, this iconic symbol joins the ranks of other American emblems like the oak tree 🌳, the rose 🌹, and the bison 🦬. Once an endangered species, the bald eagle's journey represents resilience and strength—a true testament to America's spirit.

The bald eagle joins the rose, the bison, and the oak tree as an official American symbol

The bald eagle had been on the nation’s Great Seal since the Revolutionary War, but it was never codified in law as the official bird.

Did Benjamin Franklin really want the turkey to be the US national bird?

Probably not. But there's more to the story than meets the eye.

The August 2024 issue of Living Bird, published by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, has an article about USA's national bird.

Or rather, about how the US does not have an official national bird!

Though the Bald Eagle adorns the official seal of the USA (est 1782), legislation to designate the large raptor as the national bird was never introduced.

A bill to do so passed the Senate this year and is currently before the House.

Luxon must be so disappointed that the Kiwi is our national bird. It's a brown, quiet, unassuming creature which goes around in the dark with its head down.
Almost, I dunno, "negative, wet and whiny, inward-looking”?

I'm sure he'd much rather we were represented by a bird with "mojo.. with a lot more ambition and aspiration".
A loudmouth look-at-me bird like the mynah, perhaps.
