Though the Bald Eagle adorns the official seal of the USA (est 1782), legislation to designate the large raptor as the national bird was never introduced.
A bill to do so passed the Senate this year and is currently before the House.
Luxon must be so disappointed that the Kiwi is our national bird. It's a brown, quiet, unassuming creature which goes around in the dark with its head down.
