Time for a bold nation brand: bring on a new Brand Aotearoa

I finally watched the 2019 documentary Very Ralph, on Ralph Lauren, and how he built his company on an aspirational image of the American Dream. Never mind that it wasn’t exactly real, and a fantasy that he brought out for customers to buy into, the public understood the codes (life in the Hamptons or the

Watched the 2019 doco on Ralph Lauren on the plane back. Lauren sold the American Dream in his campaigns. He relied on a version of his nation’s image. In a dreamland, sure. So what is our equivalent? In the 2000s, I could think of one—a faraway centre of creativity and imagination surrounded by natural wonder. Today … I really don’t know if #Aotearoa has one that could resonate globally. And that is troublesome for any exporter. #NationBranding #branding #NationalImage #NZ

It was such a pleasure introducing students from Canada, Israel and Thailand to the concepts of #PublicDiplomacy and #NationBranding as part of @hdmstuttgart's International Summer Course! After my intro our guests got interviewed by dedicated local students at campus radio HORADS 88,6.
Next week, the students from Toronto, Rishon LeZion and Bangkok will be producing a radio show on their own, looking into the public diplomacy and nation branding activities of their home countries.
Where is brand Aotearoa?

One thing holding back exports from Aotearoa New Zealand is the absence of a true, authentic national brand. I said this even back in the days of the 100% Pure campaign, which was much lauded. I cynically asked: can we really claim this when France and Germany outspend us on the environment as a percentage

From The Lord of the Rings to Border Patrol: how Sweden sees us

Something that goes beyond Border Patrol as our sole media ambassador in 2024 might be truly needed.

It's been so delightful to meet and team up with visiting students from Canada, Israel and the U.S. at @hdmstuttgart yesterday! As part of HdM's International Summer Course, I gave an introduction to the concepts of #PublicDiplomacy, #NationBranding and #CompetitiveIdentity, followed by a tour of HdM's campus radio, HORADS 88.6, where the visitors got interviewed by fellow students. Next Tuesday they'll produce their own radio show on the topic of international communication. So super.
