finished Natasha Pulley's "The Bedlam Stacks". Lovely character driven story, with (for Pulley) familiar driving mood of longing and love, along with colonialism and orientalism/exoticism, along with, huh, weird not-quite-time travel and interesting counterfactual humans. And beautifully written. #natashapulley really enjoying her work

Best book gift by an unknown author I've ever received. Fantasy/Magic realism set in Victorian London. Thaniel tracks down the origin of a watch which pre-set alarm saves him from a bombing. He meets an eccentric builder of mechanics, among them an octopus called Katsu. This watchmaker seems to want to be-friend Thaniel, but there is some mystery to him.

Interesting characters, drama and a very gentle love story between the two men.
