Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar has thanked Lebanon’s Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah for his support in the ongoing war with Israel. In a letter dated Monday but released Friday by Hezbollah’s media office, Sinwar thanks Nasrallah for the “blessed acts” of Iran-backed groups in their support for Hamas since the deadly Oct. 7 incursion into Israel that sparked the Israel-Hamas war. Some 1,200 people were killed that day and another 250 were abducted. On Oct. 8, Hezbollah started attacking Israeli military posts along the border, triggering an ongoing exchange of fire that has left hundreds dead. More than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza. Sinwar called the war “one of the most honorable battles for the Palestinian people.”

Hassan Nasrallah’s comments on Wednesday come as the cross-border conflict simmering between Hezbollah and Israel for more than eight months appears to be reaching a boiling point. The remarks also come a day after a top U.S. envoy met Lebanese officials in his latest attempt to ease tensions between Hezbollah and Israel over the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Nasrallah said in 2021 that Hezbollah has 100,000 fighters, but now he claims it's far beyond that. He didn't elaborate.

The military wing of Palestinian group Hamas says it fired 16 rockets from Lebanon into northern Israel, triggering Israeli airstrikes on the Lebanese side of the border. The exchange of fire came as Lebanon’s militant group Hezbollah said its fighters attacked at least three Israeli military posts along the border. The Israeli army said approximately 30 rockets were fired from the Lebanese side targeting northern Israel, adding it was responding by shelling the origin points of rocket launches. The exchange lasted about half an hour and Israel’s Iron Dome could be clearly seen intercepting rockets from Lebanon. Tension has been on the rise on the Lebanon-Israel border after the Israel-Hamas war started about a month ago.
