This #PlumeMoth species was previously last recorded in the ACT (as far as I know) back in 1950. I'd been thinking of planning visits to #Namadgi to look for it next summer, but I just found one in #NatureMapr identified (then) as Platyptilia celidotus. I added the identification and it's been accepted by others, so this record can now flow correctly into the #AtlasOfLivingAustralia and then @gbif

Stenoptilia leuconephes at Namadgi National Park

Canberra & Southern Tablelands - NatureMapr

A total fluke of a shot, but we will proudly claim it anyway - a flame robin (Petrocia phoenica) taking flight off a seed-head in grasslands in Nadamdgi National Park in the far south of the Australian Capital Territory.

The thermometer was reading a mild 2 degrees, but the icy wind off the snow was cutting straight through me, so it was a struggle to keep the camera steady.

A wonderful chance to capture a flame robin (Petrocia phoenica) beating a caterpillar to death against a fallen branch.

I was trying to figure out what the birds were that I was seeing in large flocks flying around me as I was hiking. Now looking at the field guide, I realise they were probably also flame robins, apparently the only Australian robin that gathers in flocks.

Last weekend I walked up Square Rock, near Corin Dam in Namadgi National Park. It was a really pleasant walk - steepish in a couple of spots but lots of flat walking on a good trail. Took us about 3 hours plus lunch. Highly recommended

On Saturday I cycled from Canberra to Bendora Dam and back. What an adventure!

Bendora Dam is between Corin and the Cotter dams and is directly west of Tuggeranong. Deep in the Namadgi National Park, it's fairly remote. We rode for 5 hours before coming across anyone else. The roads are dirt but well maintained - until we got lost.

Getting lost meant that we ended up at the dam itself which was a treat, though we didn't get to see the reservoir. But to try to hook up with the original route we had to push our bikes for an hour up the side of a peak to Bendora Hut! With an elevation of 1300m it's above the snowline and, though there was little snow, it was cold up there.

From Bendora Hut we had a fast, fun descent to Picadilly Circus and then a whole lot more back to Canberra.

It was about 6 hours of riding and a 9 hour trip all up. There were plenty of stops - an echidna, an arboretum, ice sheets, river crossing, a lyrebird and of course roos and wallabies.

Canberra's a great place to live.

Investigating the dam also led me to this - an interactive map of the city's water supply. Very cool.

Scarlet robin (Petroica multicolor) on the way to Nursery Swamp in the mountains south of the Australian Capital Territory.

A bit grainy and fuzzy - but one of the species that first got me into bird photography, so I’m delighted to have seen them.

I was down in Canberra on Friday, so grabbed a chance to go for a hike in the mountains this morning before heading back to Sydney. I hiked up to Nursery Swamp - the first time I've been back there in over thirty years.

A chilly morning - any standing water was frozen over.

The photo is Nursery Swamp itself - apparently mainland Australia's largest fen.
