"On Saturday afternoon, 16th and Valencia Streets steadily began to fill with hundreds of young people โ€” excitedly talking amongst each other and passing one another handmade signs, pamphlets, even a paper newspaper, commemorating the Nakba โ€” the violent displacement of Palestinians in 1948.

'Do you need a sign?' asked a young woman to an empty-handed man leaning against a wall. Readily, he grabbed a sign โ€” and a pamphlet โ€” and began reading.

By 2:30 p.m., the block had closed, and young protesters in neon jackets began redirecting traffic, as two young men clad in keffiyehs hopped onto the back of a truck, their make-do stage.

By this time, a couple hundred protesters had taken over the street, their voices reverberating off the walls of the Valencia Street corridor as people went about their Saturdays, buying coffee and walking their dogs.

A crowd of people, many wearing black and white keffiyehs, hold signs and a large Palestinian flag at an outdoor protest on a sunny day.

The protest took place two days after 'Nakba Day' on May 15, which commemorates the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes and villages upon the founding of the state of Israel, in 1948. Nakba means 'catastrophe' in Arabic."

"Tens of thousands of people have rallied across the world in solidarity with Palestinians amid Israelโ€™s brutal war on Gaza and to mark the 1948 ethnic cleansing of Palestinians by Jewish militias, remembered as the Nakba, or catastrophe.

The Nakba resulted in the permanent mass displacement of Palestinians after the creation of Israel in 1948. Activists say that history is repeating itself today in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

(. . .)

Globally, May 15 was observed as the 77th anniversary of the expulsion of 700,000 Palestinians from their homes following the establishment of Israel in 1948.

The Israeli military has killed 53,272 Palestinians and injured 120,673 since it launched an offensive on October 7, 2023, according to Gazaโ€™s Ministry of Health. The Government Media Office updated the death toll to more than 61,700, noting that thousands still missing beneath the rubble are presumed dead.

2 protesters arrested during on-campus demonstration remembering Nakba Day - Daily Bruin

This post was updated May 16 at 12:24 a.m. Two people were arrested during a demonstration held Thursday by pro-Palestine organizations at UCLA in remembrance of the 1948 Nakba.  The demonstration was hosted by several campus organizations โ€“ including Students for Justice in Palestine, a temporarily suspended organization โ€“ and intended to recognize Nakba Day โ€“ which recognizes when around 700,000 Palestinians were expelled by Israeli forces during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.  โ€œThe day is important to recognize today because it just demonstrates the longevity of the violence of the Zionist entity against Palestinians and the fact that it did not start October 7,โ€ said Mohammed, an SJP spokesperson who was granted partial anonymity due to fear of retaliation.
