We are excited to release the latest video from our First Nations Elders Oral History Project in time for NAIDOC Week. Following her first performance in Brisbane at the age of 17, Wilma Reading would be propelled to stardom from the 1960s to the 1980s, with the Cairns-born singer touring the world, performing with Duke Ellington, and becoming the first-ever Australian guest on the Johnny Carson Show.

Wilma was inducted into the National Indigenous Music Awards Hall of Fame in 2019 and continues to be very involved in the local music community, providing inspiration to First Nations musicians to follow their dreams. Watch the full 1 hour 15 minute interview with Wilma via our One Search catalogue -

We've always lived by the sea…

Learn more about this unique skink, and the efforts to conserve it: https://ausgeo.co/tjakura 🦎

Have you heard of the Tjakuṟa? Also known as the great desert skink, this species is not only special for its beautiful sunset colours and unique family units and burrows – it is also an important Tjukurrpa (Creation) animal for many Indigenous desert communities.

The Tjakuṟa is facing a difficult battle for survival, but thankfully, Indigenous rangers across the Australian desert have joined forces with Resilient Landscapes Hub and Indigenous Desert Alliance to protect the iconic species.

I thought that since it's #NAIDOC week, I'd share some of my favourite music by indigenous performers. This is all stuff from my regular playlist on Tidal.

First, Archie Roach, Took The Children Away.

‘Nyul Nyul Girl’, written by Jimmy Chi and sung by Dan Sultan, comes from the soundtrack to the 2009 film ‘Bran Nue Dae’, directed by Rachel Perkins, featuring Geoffrey Rush as Father Benedictus.

The lyrics reference the Aboriginal dialect spoken by the Nyulnyul people of Western Australia.

#NAIDOC is an Australia-wide annual event celebrating the history, Culture & Achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
