Today’s T-shirt.

May the circle of peace grow! Today is #NagasakiDay and it’s been 79 years since the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons entered into force on January 22nd 2021. Still, only five European countries have joined since September 20th 2017 and this is disgraceful. Thank you to Austria, The Holy See, Malta, Ireland and San Marino for leading the way.

“We travelled north from London together on the Caledonian Sleeper. The tree got the upper bunk, I had the lower one.”

On 9 August 1945, the second – & so far, last – nuclear weapon used in war fell on Nagasaki. One of the few things to survive the bomb was a persimmon tree. In 2002, the poet Gerry Loose brought a sapling from that tree to Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens

The Bottle Imp

"After experiencing that nightmarish war,
that blood-curdling carnage,
that unendurable horror,
Who could walk away without praying for peace?"

-Kitamura Seibō (北村西望 1884-1987).

Remembering #Nagasaki I was fortunate to visit very briefly last year. The peace park was beautiful and so were the exhibits - but mostly I thought how much some of this should be in the US (and other places)

#NagasakiDay

At 11:02am on August 9th 1945 a plutonium atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. It came only 3 days after the destruction of Hiroshima.

About one-third of Nagasaki City was destroyed and 150,000 people were killed or injured.
