In Ginza, the shadow of the Aum sect.
AGI - The attack with a toxic substance in a Tokyo shopping mall brings to mind the attacks carried out in Japan by Aum Shinrikyo, the apocalyptic sect led by Shoko Asahara.
The first attack with sarin
The first one dates back to June 27, 1994 and was the first case of large-scale attack carried out with sarin against civilians. Aum Shinrikyo dispersed the nerve gas in a residential district of Matsumoto, in Nagano Prefecture, to target some judges involved in a lawsuit unfavorable to the sect. 8 people died and hundreds were poisoned.
Between 1994 and 1995, Aum also used VX, a nerve agent even more persistent than sarin, to target people considered enemies or suspects, but the most serious attack was carried out on the Tokyo subway on March 20, 1995.
Five members of the sect released sarin on multiple subway trains during rush hour. The death toll was 13 and over 6,000 were poisoned. The followers attempted again on May 5 of the same year with an attack at Shinjuku station, where a device with hydrogen cyanide was found. It did not cause a massacre because it was detected and neutralized in time, but it could have caused a very high number of victims if the gas had entered the ventilation system.
Before the sarin attacks, Aum had also experimented with biological agents, including botulinum and anthrax, with dispersal attempts in Tokyo in the early nineties.
