POLITICAL PROTEST
Opposition politician Boris #Nadezhdin, who tried unsuccessfully to run against Vladimir #Putin in a presidential election last year, led a protest outside the Duma on Tuesday and promised to continue protesting the bill's passage through the upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, before it becomes law on September 1.
"These amendments have caused a level of resistance in Russian society that has not been seen for a long time," Nadezhdin said, pointing to the surprisingly high number of lawmakers voting against the proposed legislation in the Duma, which rarely sees serious dissent.
The law was approved with 68% of the vote. There were 67 votes against the legislation, or 14.9%, and 22 abstentions.

Russia’s Supreme Court on February 21 threw out anti-war presidential candidate Boris #Nadezhdin’s latest appeal of the Central Election Commission’s (TsIK) decision to bar him from next month’s presidential election.

The Uzbekistan-born 60-year-old academic and former lawmaker had appealed the Central Election Commission’s final decision to bar him from the election.

TsIK, which routinely refuses to register would-be opposition candidates on the pretext that they submitted an insufficient number of valid signatures, disqualified thousands of signatures Nadezhdin's representatives gathered across the country to reach the 100,000-signature threshold needed to be registered as a candidate.

Last week the same court rejected two other appeals he filed over TsIK decisions related to the collection of signatures on petitions to register his candidacy. The decision on February 21 can be appealed to the Appeal Board of the Supreme Court.
Russian elections are tightly controlled by the Kremlin and are neither free nor fair but are viewed by the government as necessary to convey a sense of legitimacy.

2/ #Davankov said that he wants to invite Boris #Nadezhdin, to include some of his theses in his election program, which will be presented on Feb 15.

#Nadezhdin's called the invasion of #Ukraine a mistake and called for peace talks, while also openly criticizing Vladimir #Putin, something other candidates have been hesitant to do. The Central Election Commission refused him, claiming that there were many defects in the signatures he collected.
