Why it matters:

Weakening the 2030 mandate hands fossil-fuel polluters more time to profit while communities keep breathing dirty air and missing clean-energy jobs. Courts forced DEC to act; delaying is a gift to industry, not New Yorkers.

New York City powers the state economy, growing 110% from 2010 to 2024 while the rest of New York grew 68%. Yet NYC taxpayers generate 54.5% of state revenue but receive only 40.5% back. In FY 2022, the city sent $68.8 billion to Albany and got $47.6 billion back, a $21.2 billion gap while NYC faces a $5.4 billion budget shortfall. #NewYorkCity #NYPolitics #Budget

The New York Post reported on what it believes are the five front-runners to be the next New York City schools chancellor. The article leads with the most well-known name of the bunch, Jamal Bowman, whose accomplishments include running a New York City school without a license and, while in Congress, pulling a fire alarm to delay a vote. While I have little hope for the present or future of New York City public schools, I will submit for the record that I would be surprised to see a Chancellor Bowman. I will explain my prediction nicely by noting that I am reasonably confident he did not understand that he would be on camera when he pulled the fire alarm in Congress.

[Note] Chancellor Bowman?

I express my doubts that Jamal Bowman will be the new New York City schools chancellor, cryptically citing to his rationale to pull a fire alarm while in Congress.

According to Joseph Burns writing for City Journal, “while the final tallies [in the 2025 NYC Mayoral election] identified Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa as the losers, the name of the real loser didn’t even appear on the ballot: Governor Kathy Hochul.” While Ms. Hochul is likely less than enthusiastic about running for re-election next year with the brave new New York City looming over her shoulder, I dare say Mr. Cuomo, who has his own axe to grind with her, probably had a worse election night. But what struck me is that you have to be in a bit of a pundit bubble to identify as the real loser of the New York City mayoral election… the Governor? You especially have to be in a bubble when, regardless of the electoral liabilities tied to the new Mayor outside of the transplant hipster demographic in New York City, said Governor is still favored to win a second full term next November.

[Note] The “Real” Loser of NYC’s Mayor Race?

I question the assessment in a City Journal opinion peace that the “real loser” of the 2025 NYC Mayoral election is NY Governor Kathy Hochul.
