NHL's East playoff race shaken up as the Flyers rise and Red Wings fall

The Eastern Conference playoff race has a distinctly different look now than it did in late March. While the Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens have solidified their spots, the Philadelphia Flyers crashed the party by going on an improbable run to get into a playoff position. The Detroit Red Wings dropped in the standings, and the New York Islanders had such a late-season swoon that general manager Mathieu Darche fired coach Patrick Roy with four games left. Alex Ovechkin also may be nearing the end of his NHL career with the Washington Capitals running out of time to make up ground.

The #NYR stink all year at home and can't score. The #Caps look great Saturday vs. #Sabres and could have been one point out of playoffs after a win Sunday in MSG.

The Rangers win 8-1. Make it make sense.

With the Rangers' recent hot streak, the entire East finishing at fake .500 is back in play. The schedule is tough, but if #NYR win three of their last four, they'll get there. And then the Leafs (+1) and Panthers (E) need to hold on. #NHL

Charlie Lindgren allowed eight goals on 32 shots as the defense melted down in front of him, and the Washington Capitals blew a major opportunity to keep pace in the Eastern Conference playoff race by losing to the already-eliminated New York Rangers 8-1. They now face a daunting task to get in: three points back with four games left to play. Will Cuylle scored with 31.5 seconds left to complete his first NHL hat trick.
