Day in and day out. Getting in early on a Friday night. Getting out earlier on a Saturday morning. It was the support you gave your teammates and the strength they gave you back. It was what you took on and got over and worked through and overcame that got you here. It wasn’t luck. It was the control you had at the start and the focus you had during the middle and the push you gave at the end that got you here. It wasn’t luck that got you through those hard runs. It wasn’t luck that did the runs in the rain or snow or before work or after school. It wasn’t luck that dealt with the setbacks and struggles. Luck didn’t pick you up when you fell down and luck didn’t lift up your teammates when they felt down. Luck isn’t what got you to this starting line… the starting line of the best high school cross country race in the country. And what makes it the best race in the country isn’t the banners or flagging lining the course or the jerseys or beanies you get. It’s the best race because of you and your teammates and your competitors. You are why this race is the best. So, if I am going to wish you anything it’s that you go to the starting line knowing that. You are here because you earned your place on the line. Now, all you need to do is cross that line on Saturday. You won’t need any luck out there on the course. You just need to give your best. Because when you do that… you are one of the best. And luck has nothing to do with it.
