Contract delays taking toll on P.E.I. nurses, union warns
Prince Edward Island’s nurses have been working without a collective agreement for more than a year, and their union president says delays at the bargaining table are hurting morale and making it harder to recruit and retain staff.

When I was at the hospital today, I was using my phone to keep my bf and local folks updated on what was happening. Nobody was batting an eye.

Then I remembered how different things were in 1996, when I had my heart attack. A friend had lent me an old laptop he was not using for me to keep into contact with my Internet friends. We were students in computer engineering. The nurses had a fit when they saw me with that laptop. I had to explain to them that I was not working, but keeping in touch with my friends. In the end, I was allowed the laptop, but the notion that someone would use a laptop to keep in contact with anyone was alien to the nurses.

This was one of the biggest reasons I changed my major from medicine to IT: I saw this trainwreck coming.

> “Access to federal loans were a lifeline for me,” said Leigh Habegger, a student in Wake Forest University’s program to train physician assistants, another profession affected by the new rule.

Habegger had a decade-long career in public policy work before going back to school last year. She called her program “rigorous” and said she’s unable to work while studying, even though her program costs more than $50,000 a year.

“One of my fellow classmates in the class above me shared that from his class that just graduated last weekend, nearly 90 percent of students said that they would not have been able to attend PA school without federal loans."

“This rule stands to have a significant negative impact on the number of students who are able to attend PA school … in North Carolina precisely at a time when our state needs us the most.”

Connection: The Secret to a Successful Consultation

I'm Adam Widdison, author of The Expert Clinician. My work explores how clinicians think — and, more importantly, how we can sharpen that thinking in the high-pressure reality of modern practice. Every experienced healthcare professional (HCP) knows the routine. At the start of a consultation, you instinctively map out your goals: adapt your focus, refine your questions, and look for signs that will guide you towards a diagnosis and a management plan. In my previous post, 👉A Good […]

We know weak workforce planning & staff shortages are a major element in the continuing NHS crisis, so its unsurprising nurses see this problem as part of their every day experience.... and the thing about health *care* is in the end its only really going to be as good as the people working & their ability to focus on the care of patients - it really is a numbers game.

Perhaps now West Streeting is gone, the idea that technology is the answer will fade?

Saskatoon clinic says nurses are dealing with so many overdoses, they want knee pads
Toby Esterby, the chief operations officer for the clinic on 20th Street in the Pleasant Hill neighbourhood, urged city council to devote resources to address homelessness and addiction, arguing that such spending will reduce the need for responses from the police and fire departments.
