I'm kind of the opinion that, just like how FDR modernized the US by expanding the federal government, Trump is "modernizing the US" by rolling back civil liberties, protections, and in a broad sense the liberal democratic project overall.
In order to defeat the US's great rivals, China, Russia, Iran, all illiberal, it must become illiberal itself. It's the New New Right's collectivist ideal that the security of the nation supersede an individual's rights in all cases.
