"Cornell Tech has received more than $7 million from Schmidt Sciences and NASA to upgrade arXiv, an open-access research repository of more than 2.8 million articles. "

It's great news for arXiv. I'm just wondering why they want actually move to the cloud:

"finish migrating to cloud infrastructure"

NREN are providing access for educational networks, I hope the cloud mentioned there is operated by a NREN operator.

The funding will help arXiv – which is maintained and operated by Cornell Tech – finish migrating to cloud infrastructure and modernizing its code.

> San Diego State University (SDSU) recently announced that it would become the first CENIC member—and the first research institution in the world—to enjoy a native 800 Gigabit per second (Gbps) connection to a high-performance research and education network, the network being of course CENIC’s California Research and Education Network (CalREN)

From https://cenic.org/news/cenic-juniper-networks-enable-800-gbps-connections-to-california-research-and-education-network-for-cenic-members

Insane capacity for sure.

CENIC | CENIC, Juniper Networks Enable 800 Gbps Connections to California Research and Education Network for CENIC Members

SDSU's 800G connection to CalREN—the first native 800 Gigabit per second (Gbps) connection to a high-performance research and education network—is now active, and CENIC anticipates further interest from other member institutions.

This week, we joined the #RTISummit2025 in Copenhagen to highlight the role of GÉANT and our #NREN community in supporting research and innovation across Europe.

We were part of a joint booth together with the European e-Infrastructures Assembly: EGI Foundation, EUDAT, @OpenAIRE, & PRACE, showcasing how we work together to support European research, education, and innovation.

👏 Thank you to the event organisers & to all who joined us at the booth.

Data transfer graph between NKN (India's NREN) and NORDUnet (NREN for Nordic countries) https://stats.nordu.net/stat-q/r-all?q=all&name=NKN. Low data transfer between the two though.

Peering seems to be via Netherlight (https://www.surf.nl/en/services/network-connectivity/netherlight) in Amsterdam from https://nordu.net/nkn-india-and-nordunet-set-direct-peering/ (2017).

NKN India (tier 2 site at VECC-SINP campus in Kolkata) and TIFR India connections can be seen on bottom left corner.

Transfer rates are almost same as between GEANT-NKN as essentially they're the same link. NKN/TIFR participate in LHCONE (India has two tier 2 sites) which carries LHC data over these links for scientific research purposes.

Public Graphana of transfer between NKN (India's NREN) and GEANT (essentially EU NREN backbone) https://public-brian.geant.org/d/ZyVgYFgVk/nkn?orgId=5&from=now-30d&to=now.

Transfer on both side usually seems to be averaging around 600 Mbps (lower than I expected).

From https://web.archive.org/web/20211010081515/https://www.geant.org/News_and_Events/Pages/New-NKN-international-network-to-boost-EU-India-collaboration.aspx published in 2016, NKN seems to have 2x10 Gbps capacity towards GEANT.

From NIXI (India's NREN) August end ASN transfers, I see roughly 825(x2) ASN were handed out. From AS147316 till AS148966, see https://mirrors.de.sahilister.net/pub/ftp.ripe.net/ripe/asnames/asn.txt.

The number is interesting for me, as from my previous count (for https://blog.sahilister.in/2024/09/educational-and-research-institutions-with-own-asn-in-india/) the number as of now is less than 70 for education/research ASNs.
