.13. #WebAuthorsCafe 10/13-10/19: What is the spookiest thing you have ever written? Can you share a piece? (Don’t be bashful if it’s not very spooky.)
I really have no idea. I have written so much that is intended to be spooky.
But here is a piece
Snip from Konbini Idol
Shishi pointed, but I saw a leprous, winged monkey instead of a rodent. Its mottled ocher fur clashed with its grimy orange and green jacket. Beneath a cap, two fever-bright yellow eyes gleamed. It strutted onto the path, squatted, and glowered.
The woman’s gaze lifted: her nose had caved in to a flat face, and her eyes, round, red marbles, stared unblinking. I shuddered; it was like she was rotting from within.
“Come closer. This old woman won’t harm you,” she rasped, beckoning with a hand missing half its fingers, the rest shortened stumps. “Not all that’s ugly is cursed; sometimes it is a blessing.” Her laughter spilled out, only to end in a phlegm-filled fit.
“Let’s not,” Shishi whispered. I had to agree with her. Unfortunately, our path ran next to the woman. The forest shadows had drawn close, hemming us in, leaving little choice but to go past her.
“The other path,” Tomo said, squinting. “There’s a sign, right? Sasayaki… Jinja, I think. Or was it Sutokubyō’s shrine?” He pointed toward a bare branch, but beyond, sticky, half-consumed gumdrops and candy canes lay scattered on the trail, like carnival beads abandoned in the mud. That way led to another witch.
