#Digitrax uses memory locations, called slots, to manage locomotive addresses. Clearing these slots can often solve issues.

LocoNet and Slots

A Digitrax term for managing locomotives controlled by a Digitrax DCC system. The number of slots determines the number of multifunction decoders the command station can control. Memory slots are allocated to manage throttle parameters and consists created by the command station.

Wangrow Electronics SystemOne #NMRADCC for #modelrailroads was an early entry. While Wangow has been gone for 20 yrs, the SystemOne is still very capable. #NCE was a contractor for both components and software.

NCE would later go it alone, and Wangrow would struggle to create their own software before ceasing business operations.

A number of command control systems have appeared for #modelrailroads over the years.

None were overly successful as incompatibility was the rule. The #NMRA would eventually create a standardized system called "Digital Command Control" in 1993.

History of Digital Command Control

From the earliest days of Model Railroading, the idea of being able to operate trains in a prototypical manner was pursued. Advances included direct current power, solid state electronics enhancing operation with features like pulse power, and other innovations. The wiring would evolve to include complex block systems. With all these advances, the ability to control the locomotive, not the track, eluded everyone.

E24: A new interface from ESU. Uses a J3200 connector used on the iPhone 6 camera.

Main use: Multifunction decoders for N Scale. Lower profile and more connections than Next18. ESU's 53900 decoder tester includes this interface.

Applications: LokSound 5 Nano, forthcoming LokPilot Nano. Digitrax SDXN1137E24 Series 7

Layout Command Control

An adjunct to Digital Command Control, & an #NMRA Standard. Provides a bus for auxiliary functions, reducing load on the throttle network.

LCC does not require a computer to operate!

Railroad Model Craftsman has a 3 part series on LCC beginning August 2024

Layout Command Control

An NMRA standard for a Layout Command Control bus. This provides a communications protocol which adds additional capability to your layout. Doing for accessories what DCC does for the track. LCC does not replace DCC, but enhances it.

ASTRAC by GE - The DCCWiki

The ASTRAC or Automatic Simultaneous Train Control system was the first commercial command control system since Lionel's Electronic Control System. ASTRAC could also be described as a carrier control or analog command control system. ASTRAC was developed, manufactured and marketed by General Electric. It employed Silicon Controlled Rectifiers, General Electric's name for their new semiconductor device.

There are several ways of measuring the voltage on the track with Digital Command Control.

Its nature means measurements may not reflect reality, and how the measurement is made is important.

Digital multimeters often give misleading results due to how they actually measure the voltage.

Measuring DCC Voltages

There are several ways of measuring the voltage on the track when Digital Command Control is used. Measuring track voltage is a different process than one used for analog control systems

Making a #Digitrax #LocoNet cable.

https://dccwiki.com/LocoNet/Making_a_LocoNet_Cable

It is critical that the type of RJ connectors match the type of wire it will be crimped on to. Stranded wire needs a plug meant for stranded wire.

Plus a good set of crimpers. Cheap ones often don't work well.

Digitrax: Making a LocoNet Cable

Constructing a LocoNet cable is easy with the proper tools, flat six wire cabling and RJ12/RJ25 modular plugs. The crimping tool will strip the proper amount of insulation from the cable. The connectors have stabs to pierce the insulation of the individual wires when the connector is crimped on, as well as a strain relief. A cable can be constructed easily in a few minutes.
