Yesterday: Spent a few hours at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in New York for programs related to their exhibit "Clearly Indigenous." There are no more programs on the calendar, but the exhibit will remain through May 29. The glasswork is beautiful and I highly recommend you see it if you're in the NYC area.

And if you're not? It will be traveling around the country!

Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass | National Museum of the American Indian

The NMAI fosters a richer shared human experience through a more informed understanding of Native peoples.

National Museum of the American Indian

@xankarn I saw several headlines about the administration's attack on the Smithsonian last evening and promptly changed my plans for today (ah! the joys of retirement!) to instead visit the National Museum of the American Indian in NYC while it still exists and has any historical accuracy in its exhibits.

As ever, it was a wonderful experience. Admission is free, so I left behind a little money in their gift shop.

Heute vor 20 Jahren eröffnete das National #Museum of the American Indian (#NMAI) an der #NationalMall in #Washington, DC. Für unsere #Expokritik hat damals Gabriele Kämper die #Ausstellung besucht:

Native Knowledge 360֯ and Teaching for Change Teach-In - Teaching for Change

National curriculum teach-in for educators held online on Saturday, November 4th, 2023. A day of online conversation, curriculum highlights, workshops, and idea exchange to promote improved teaching about American Indian communities.

Teaching for Change
Excavated in 1924 from the Lovelock Cave in Nevada, at more than 2000 years old these are the oldest duck decoys in the world. Image taken in the store of the National Museum of the American Indian, Washington DC. These were one of the most amazing things I saw in my day behind the scenes at the museum. The Northern Paiute trace the decoys back to forebears known as the People of the Marsh, but researchers associate them with a group known as the Lovelock archaeological culture. #museums #NMAI

So this is a youtube link to a video I was fortunate enough to watch at the #Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian while I was there in August.

https://youtu.be/yPEuQNp0nII

It's an interview/dialog/monologue with Paul Chaat Smith (Comanche), a curator at #NMAI about #Thanksgiving and I think it's worth watching. It's also extremely well-produced, visually speaking.
