On 27 June 1938 #USSR #NKVD arrested an #Ukraine born Soviet rocket scientist Sergei Korolev charging him with “espionage”. During interrogations, Korolev was beaten so severely that his jaw was broken. At the same he was actually lucky to survive as his former directors at Reactive Scientific Research Institute (RNII) were executed.
When the World War II started in 1939 with USSR as an ally of Nazi Germany, Korolev was breaking rocks in deadly GULag gold mines in Kolyma. But then, when Germany attacked USSR in 1941, Soviet authorities suddenly recalled they have such a valuable resource and pulled Korolev out of the camp.
For a few years Korolev was then working in secret prison-likes research institutes (sharashka), developing rocket weapons for the Red Army. He was eventually pardoned and rehabilitated in 1945 and after Nazi surrender even went to Germany as part of the secret Soviet missions to scavenge advanced technologies and capture any remaining German scientists before Americans do.

Today Russian media happily boast about “the Russian genius Korolev”, conveniently skipping the part that he was born in Ukraine and survived their own Russian camps only by miracle. Oh, and they also routinely accuse USA of “recruiting Nazis” after WW2 while conveniently skipping the part where well over 2000 Nazi scientists were captured and worked for USSR developing their rocket program in the following years…
