As we welcome 2025, I'd like to take a moment to reflect on what an extraordinary year 2024 has been for Brown CS Secure Systems Lab (https://gitlab.com/brown-ssl/). It has been a year of innovation, creativity, and growth—both for the lab and for me personally as its director. Witnessing the passion, dedication, and brilliance of our team—Neophytos Christou, Alexander Gaidis, Marius Momeu, @dijin, and Vaggelis Atlidakis—has been truly fulfilling and inspiring!

In 2024, we tackled complex challenges and made significant strides in advancing our research on software hardening and OS kernel protection. Here are some highlights from this remarkable year:

✳️ Marius Momeu presented #SafeSlab at @acm_ccs #CCS2024. Safeslab hardens the Linux SLUB allocator against exploits that abuse use-after-free (#UaF) vulnerabilities, using #Intel #MPK. (Joint work with Technical University of Munich and @mikepo.)

✳️ Neophytos Christou presented #Eclipse at @acm_ccs #CCS2024. Eclipse is a compiler-assisted framework that propagates artificial data dependencies onto sensitive data, preventing the CPU from using attacker-controlled input during speculative execution.

✳️ Di Jin presented #BeeBox at the @usenixassociation Security Symposium 2024. BeeBox hardens #Linux BPF/eBPF against transient execution attacks. #usesec24

✳️ Yaniv David presented #Quack at the NDSS Symposium 2024. Quack hardens PHP code against deserialization attacks using a novel (static) duck typing-based approach. (Joint work with Andreas D Kellas and Junfeng Yang.) #NDSSsymposium2024

✳️ Marius Momeu presented #ISLAB at @ACM #ASIACCS24. ISLAB hardens SLAB-based (kernel) allocators, against memory errors, via SMAP-assisted isolation. (Joint work with Technical University of Munich and @mikepo.) #asiaccs

🏆 #EPF (presented by Di Jin at @usenixassociation #ATC 2023) was the runner-up for the "Bug of the Year" award ("Weirdest Machine" category) at IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy LangSec (Language-Theoretic Security) workshop 2024! #atc23 #LangSec

#NDSSSymposium2024 has been a wild ride! Over 4000 emails, more than half in the last two weeks to discuss the program, organization, and to answer questions. Over 1500 HotCRP comments to interact with reviewers and authors. Long days filled with discussions with 600 attendees, 140 paper presentations across three parallel sessions, and two amazing keynotes. 10/10, amazing experience, would do again (after a break)! See you all again next year for #NDSS25 and nominate yourself and others for next year's TPC: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSft__jkj3PHGluUzNBHxuj6x_VEedCfb54pFXTLd8FM-DHHbw/viewform?pli=1
NDSS'25 PC Nomination and Self-Nomination

As one of the top four security conferences with a distinct distributed networks and systems flavor, we are looking for qualified volunteers that provide honest, excellent, and constructive reviews to the community. Nominate yourself or others to serve on the NDSS'25 program committee and help cultivate the positive NDSS spirit! Questions marked with (*) are mandatory for the (self-)nomination. PC members are expected to write their own reviews, be able to argue the merits of papers for which they are responsible, and provide constructive feedback to authors. They are expected to participate in the discussion and may be asked to serve as shepherds. We are committed to ensuring high-quality, timely reviews and a high-quality program, both of which depend critically on the PC members respecting these commitments. NDSS has set no limits on submissions by program committee members. However, Program Chairs may not submit papers. We are aware that reviewing is hard work. We are carefully aligning the deadlines to minimize overlap with other conferences and to enable reviewers breaks between reviewing deadlines. NDSS is known for its constructiveness, openness, and review quality. We ask nominees to commit to review excellence and look forward to great discussions on the submitted papers. In 2024, reviewers reviewed up to 5 papers during the summer submission cycle and 8-12 papers during the fall review cycle. NDSS'25 will again have two submission cycles, a summer cycle and a fall cycle. Each cycle will have two rounds of reviewing (R1 and R2). The CfP will be made available on https://www.ndss-symposium.org/. Summer Cycle submission deadline: April 2024 (TBC) Fall Cycle submission deadline: June/July 2024 (TBC) Many thanks for your nomination(s)! Christina Poepper & Hamed Okhravi
