Special Olympics North Carolina Returns to Raleigh This Week for 2026 Summer Games

Thousands of athletes, coaches, volunteers, and supporters are heading to the Triangle this week as the 2026 Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games return to Raleigh, Cary, and Morrisville from May 29–31. The annual event is the largest state-level competition hosted by Special Olympics North Carolina and will feature nearly 1,500 athletes competing across eight different sports.

The Summer Games bring together communities from across North Carolina for a weekend centered around inclusion, competition, and celebration. Events will take place at venues throughout Wake County including NC State University, Triangle Aquatic Center, Ravenscroft School, Buffaloe Lanes, and Triangle Volleyball Club.

What Sports Will Be Featured?

Athletes will compete in:

  • Athletics (Track & Field)
  • Basketball
  • Bowling
  • Cheerleading
  • Gymnastics
  • Powerlifting
  • Swimming
  • Volleyball

Special Olympics North Carolina says the Summer Games are designed to provide athletes with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to compete, build friendships, and showcase their talents on a statewide stage.

Opening Ceremony and Community Impact

One of the biggest highlights of the weekend will be the Opening Ceremony, which includes the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg and celebration events welcoming athletes from across the state.

The event also creates a major positive impact for the Triangle region by bringing visitors to local hotels, restaurants, parks, and businesses throughout Raleigh and Cary during the multi-day competition weekend.

Volunteers Still Needed

Special Olympics North Carolina is still seeking volunteers for several Summer Games events and activities. Community members age 14 and older can sign up to assist with competitions, athlete support, logistics, and Healthy Athletes programming.
