Dimmuborgir (not to confuse with the Norwegian Black Metal Band "Dimmu Borgir") is a lava field at the foot of the Hverfjall in the Icelandic Myvatn-region. Dimmuborgir means "dark castles" and is a pretty matching name.

The most famous part of Dimmuborgir is the giant rock arch, which is a popular tourist photo spot. I had to wait a while before I got a shot without people on it :D

That day, we took a hike up this crater, around the rim and the other side down. From up there was a great view of Myvatn. Myvatn means "Mosquito Lake" btw. :D
At the foot of the crater on the other side started the lava field of Dimmuborgir.

▴ Grjótagjá

Grjótagjá is a small lava cave near Lake Mývatn formed by volcanic activity. It features impressive lava formations and a crystal-clear, hot pool, for which reason it once served as a popular bathing spot. Nowadays, however, swimming is prohibited due to the water’s unpredictable and dangerously high temperatures, which can exceed 50°C. The cave also gained popularity after being featured in the TV show 'Game of Thrones', further adding to its appeal. Definitely a nice spot to visit when travelling along the ring road.

▴ Námafjall Hverir

Námafjall (or Hverir) is a geothermal area in northern Iceland, just east of Lake Mývatn. The landscape is dotted with steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pots, and the distinct scent of sulfur in the air. A short trail winds through the area via the Námaskarð pass, offering close-up views of this otherworldly terrain. Definitely a must-visit stop along the Ring Road or when exploring the Diamond Circle!

As opposed to the carefully developed RAWs, these #HDR images from #Myvatn area are quite over the top. But the cloudscapes look so nicely dramatic after the HDR treatment. Will keep’em in the lib.
