“Some people believe that if code is written well, it is so obvious that no comments are needed. This is a delicious myth, like a rumor that ice cream is good for your health: we’d really like to believe it! Unfortunately, it’s simply not true.”

Itself a delicious quote from John K. Ousterhout, taken from “A Philosophy of Software Design”!

Two book that I own by H S Bellamy - a deep dive into mid-century "fringe" science. Bellamy argues that Earth’s history is defined by "capturing" moons. He claims our current Moon’s arrival ~13,000 years ago caused the sinking of Atlantis and the Great Flood. It’s a wild mix of pseudo-geology and mythology.

Debunking zswap and zram myths

zswap and zram are fundamentally different approaches with different philosophies. If in doubt, use zswap.

Making up history.

I watched the Peaky Blinders film and was not impressed (beyond sets and set piece), but although I did not know about the ‘real’ Beckett (a villain in the piece), this article by his son was interesting and I think apposite. Making up heroic histories is no way to build a future.

The Peaky Blinders film is pandering to these populist times – I should know, the Nazi in it is my father

The film-makers would say they’re making drama, not history. But this is not the moment for yet another second world war film with a heroic myth, says author Francis Beckett
