Face Raiders is a true AR game where the vast majority of the game takes place in the 3D space you are in with digital holograms actually present around you. It gives a much better idea of what Mythic Realms is like than Pokémon Go does. It’s just too bad that it’s been forgotten to time and can’t compare to the cultural status that Pokémon Go has in laypeople’s minds.
With Mythic Realms on the other hand, you gather resources and build your town inside your room. You’re not going anywhere.
The real comparison in my mind is the Nintendo 3DS game Face Raiders. It was a 2011 pre-loaded game that each 3DS had. You would take a picture of someone, and then bots with their face would come flying out of portals in your walls, which you would then shoot down. It was my first experience with AR.
Furthermore #PokemonGo and #MythicRealms are completely different styles of games. #AR is a short-range physical experience. It’s why so many people turn off the AR catching feature of Pokémon Go - you catch Pokémon while you are walking to wherever you are going. You can’t just stop in the middle of the sidewalk to sneak up on a Pokémon. Even if you are in a park for a PoGo specific event, the sheer time it takes to catch in AR gets in the way of catching as many Pokémon as possible.
So I was listening to the Halloween episode of the ETAO podcast with Ryan Canuel and they were talking about Peticore’s new mixed reality game Mythic Realms.
Ryan was mentioning that if they were talking to people were unfamiliar with MR or AR, they would use Pokémon Go as a touch point - but, and Ryan mentions this too, PoGo really is an *awful* comparison to make.
