Three California quail on guard. They were introduced to Chile and live freely on San Cristóbal Hill in Santiago. It was a pleasure to see them among the bushes every time I walked along the hill's trails.

Although pumas are shy animals and attacks on humans are very rare, when I was hiking in the mountains of Chile, I was afraid of encountering one. On a few occasions, I saw fresh tracks or heard their distinctive hiss. But I never came face to face with one... except at the Santiago Zoo, when I took this photo.
