It occurred to me that reasonable comparison films in my mind to My New York Year are Good Posture and The Sun is Also a Star. If you liked those you’ll probably like My New York Year. I loved Good Posture. Rated it 10⭐️. The Sun is Also a Star I rated 9⭐️

Also, I’ve never read The Catcher in the Rye.

As some of you may know, I only read reviews after I’ve watched a film.

In the case of My New York Year the reviews are mixed.

Pamela Hutchinson in Sight and Sound liked it: https://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/reviews/my-new-york-salinger-year-2020-joanna-rakoff-memoir

Wendy Ide in Observer didn’t: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2021/may/22/my-new-york-year-review-joanna-rakoff-margaret-qualley-sigourney-weaver-jd-salinger

I rarely agree with Wendy Ide’s reviews (or Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian) so it’s hardly a surprise that I disagree with her in this case.

If you have Prime, then My New York Year is worth 1.5 hours of your time.

My New York Year review: a tender literary memoir

Margaret Qualley plays eager ingénue to Sigourney Weaver’s domineering literature agent in this charming 1990s coming-of-ager.

BFI

My New York Year is excellent. Margaret Qualley is superb in the lead role. So is Sigourney Weaver in a supporting role. The rest of the cast also good.

It won’t be an original observation but it’s reminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada but for literary nerds rather and fashionistas. Of course there are many people who are comfortable in both camps.

There are some surrealist bits in the film. Related to Joanna’s thinking. They work. I liked it. 9/10.

My New York Year film on Prime coupled with a cider and a grab big of Maltesers seems like a good plan on an increasingly windy evening.
